Real Logistics Challenges:
What We Learned at
Manifest 2025

At Manifest 2025, we spent several days immersed in the bustling expo floor, surrounded by thousands of vendors showcasing everything from cutting-edge AI tools to warehouse automation. We spoke with numerous logistics leaders, and a clear picture emerged: despite the abundance of available technology, fundamental business challenges persist.

Β

Many leaders are still grappling with core operational issues, even with access to these advancements. We found that a robust transportation management system (TMS) often forms the foundation for addressing a majority of these challenges.

Challenges Keeping Logistics Leaders Up At Night

From visibility gaps to cost pressures and driver retention struggles, these challenges remain at the forefront of industry conversations. Here’s what we learned from our discussions and how modern technology is helping to address these persistent pain points:

common logistics challenges

Visibility

Challenge

This was a top concern. Lack of real-time insight into the location and status of shipments creates anxiety and makes proactive problem-solving impossible.

Solution

Real-time tracking through GPS integration with drivers' mobile devices is crucial. Modern TMS platforms offer dashboards that provide a holistic view of all shipments, including estimated arrival times, potential delays, and exceptions. Geofencing capabilities can trigger alerts for arrivals and departures, further enhancing visibility.

Route Optimization

Challenge

Inefficient routes lead to wasted time, fuel, and resources. Real-time events like traffic or road closures exacerbate the problem.

Solution

Advanced route optimization algorithms consider factors like traffic, delivery windows, vehicle capacity, and driver availability to create the most efficient routes. Integration with real-time traffic data and mapping services allows for dynamic rerouting in response to unexpected events. This addresses the information gaps by providing up-to-the-minute adjustments.

Agile Decision-Making

Challenge

Logistics leaders need reliable data to make informed decisions and demonstrate performance to stakeholders. Inaccurate data and cumbersome reporting processes hinder agility.

Solution

A robust TMS serves as a single source of truth for all logistics data. Automated data capture eliminates manual errors and ensures accuracy. Customizable reporting tools enable users to generate reports on key metrics (e.g., on-time delivery rates, cost per mile) in a user-friendly format for leadership. This empowers data-driven decision-making and facilitates agile responses to changing conditions.

Fraud

Challenge

Logistics operations are vulnerable to various types of fraud.

Solution

A robust TMS, especially one built on a secure cloud platform like Microsoft Azure, offers multiple layers of protection against fraud. Beyond standard features like real-time tracking, delivery confirmation, and audit trails, a cloud-based TMS can leverage advanced security measures like enhanced data encryption, real-time threat detection, and regular security updates and compliance.

On-Time Arrival

Challenge

Meeting delivery promises is essential for customer satisfaction.

Solution

Real-time tracking, optimized routing, and proactive exception management help improve on-time arrival rates. Automated notifications to customers about delivery status further enhance the customer experience.

Route Settlements

Challenge

Streamlining the payment process for carriers and drivers is important for efficiency and accuracy.

Solution

Integrated settlement modules automate the calculation of payments based on mileage, deliveries, and other factors. This reduces manual effort and minimizes errors.

Inbound Flow Reliability

Challenge

Unpredictable inbound shipments can disrupt operations and create bottlenecks.

Solution

While a TMS primarily focuses on outbound deliveries, it can integrate with other systems (e.g., warehouse management systems) to provide better visibility into inbound flows. This allows for better planning and resource allocation.

Retaining Drivers

Challenge

Driver shortages are a major challenge.

Solution

Features like mobile apps for drivers, streamlined communication, and efficient routing can improve the driver experience and make it easier for them to do their jobs. This can contribute to driver retention.

Data Protection

Challenge

Protecting sensitive data is paramount.

Solution

Reputable TMS vendors prioritize data security and offer features like encryption, access controls, and regular security audits to protect proprietary information.

Delivery Errors

Challenge

Incorrect addresses, missed deliveries, and damaged goods can lead to costly returns and customer dissatisfaction.

Solution

Address validation, delivery confirmation (e.g., signature capture and photo β€œproof of delivery”), and real-time tracking can help minimize delivery errors.

Manual Processes

Challenge

Manual processes are inefficient, error-prone, and time-consuming.

Solution

Automated data capture through barcode scanning, mobile apps, and integrations with other systems eliminates manual logging and improves accuracy.

Time Windows

Challenge

Meeting tight delivery windows is crucial.

Solution

Route optimization algorithms consider time windows when planning routes, ensuring that deliveries are made within the specified timeframe.

Turning Inventory

Challenge

Efficient inventory management is essential for minimizing storage costs and maximizing profitability.

Solution

While a TMS isn't a full-fledged inventory management system, it can integrate with such systems to provide visibility into inventory levels and facilitate efficient movement of goods.

Lowering Costs

Challenge

Cost pressures are always a concern in logistics.

Solution

Route optimization, improved visibility, and reduced delivery errors all contribute to cost reduction. A TMS can also help identify areas for improvement in fuel consumption, driver productivity, and other operational efficiencies. Negotiated freight rates can be integrated into the system, offering visibility into cost comparisons.

Political Climate

Challenge

Regulatory changes and geopolitical events can impact logistics operations.

Solution

A flexible and adaptable TMS can be configured to accommodate changes in regulations and business requirements. Cloud-based solutions are often easier to update and maintain.

SSO (Single Sign-On)

Challenge

Simplifying access to the TMS and other systems improves user experience and productivity.

Solution

Many modern TMS platforms support SSO integration with other enterprise systems.
